History
Sony Corporation is a Japanese multinational conglomerate cooperation headquartered in Konan Minato, Japan and Tokyo. The business is diverse so they created products such as electronics, game, entertainment and financial service sectors.
The company is mostly common in the world for their electronic products for the consumer and professional markets.
Sony is the electronics business unit and the parent company of the Sony group, the business is run through four operating segments; Electronics (such as video games, network services and medial business), motions pictures, music and financial services. This makes Sony one of the most comprehensive entertainment companies in the world.
Sony used to be called TTK but they had already been a railway company called Tokyo Kyuko was known as TKK. So the name Sony was chosen for the brand as a mix of two words. One was the Latin word “Sonus”, which is the root of sonic and sound and the other, was “sonny”, a familiar term used in 1950’s America to call a boy. The first Sony-Branded product, the TR-55 transistor Radio, appeared in 1955 but the company name did not change to Sony until January 1958.
Sony is the electronic business unit and the parent company of the Sony Group. It primarily conducts strategic business planning of the group, research and development, planning, designing and marketing for electronics products.
Audio
Sony produced the world’s first portable music player, the Walkman in 1979. This allowed people to change their music listening habits by allowing people to carry music with them and listen to music through lightweight headphones. The Walkman begins as portable audio cassette players. The company now uses the Walkman brand to market its portable audio and video players as well as a line of former Sony ericsson mobile phones. They also created another product called the Discman which is known as a CD.
Computing
They had produced computers during the 1980’s exclusively for sale in the Japanese market. The company withdrew from the computer business around 1990. In the 1996’s Sony had come back with a new computer market under the new VAIO brand; the line was the first computer brand to highlight visual-audio features. However, they had faced considerable controversy when some of the laptops batteries had exploded, resulting in the largest computer-related recall to the point in history.
Photography&Video
Sony offers a range of digital cameras. Point-and-shoot models adopt the cypher-shot name, while digital single-lens reflex models are branded using Alpha. The first cyber-shot was introduced In 1996. At the time, digital cameras were a relative novelty. However, Sony market share of the digital camera market fell from a high of 20% to 9% by 2005.
They had entered the market with digital single-lens reflex cameras in 2006, which required the camera business of Konica Minolta. Sony rebranded the company’s line of cameras as its alpha line. They became the world’s third largest manufacturer of the camera’s, behind leader Canon and Nikons.
In 1968 Sony had started producing video cameras in which they had introduced the Trinitron brand name for its lines of aperture grille cathode ray tude television and computer monitors. Sony had stopped the production of Trinitron for most market but continued in producing products for markets such as China and more. They had finally stopped producing Trinitron-based television set in the USA in early 2007. And brought in another brand under the name BRAVIA where they had produced LCD television, projection TV’s and more. The BRAVIA logo had been carried around since 2005.
Sony also produced DVD players but recently started promoting Blu-Ray format such as disc and players.
Sony Mobile and Sony Entertainments
In 2001 Sony had entered joined venture with Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson, forming Sony Ericsson. The phone did not sell much so the company had lost a lot in 2001 and 2002. However, they had profited in 2003, by including new features such as cameras. This was unusual for the time. Despite their innovations and tense competition from Apple in 2007. From 2008 to 2010, the company had gone into global recession, which acquired Ericsson’s share of the venture in 2012 for over 1billion.
Sony is also known for producing PlayStation consoles. They had launched the first PlayStation in 1994, which gained 61% of global console sales and broke Nintendo’s long-standing lead in the market. Sony had then come out with PlayStation 2 in 2000, which was also more successful, becoming the best console of all time selling 150 million units as of 2011. Sony then released the PlayStation 3 a high definition console in 2006. It was the first console to use the Blu-ray format. This made the cell processor more expensive than the competitors Xbox 360 and Wii. However, which performed low sales for the company earlier on, pushing it to sell at a lower price.
Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. is the television and film production/distribution unit of Sony. With 12.5% box office market share in 2011, the company was ranked 3rd among movie studio’s. Its Group sales in 2010 were 7.2 billion. The company has produced many notable movie franchises including spider-man, the karate kid and men in black. It also produced popular television game shows Jeopardy! And Wheel of Fortune.
Founder
Sony had been founded in 7th may 1946 by the founders of Sony who are Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita and the Headquarters in Minato, Tokyo and Japan. The chairman of the board Sir Howard Stringer, followed by the president of CEO Kazo Hirai and Vice Chairman Ryoji. It’S Raked 87th in 2012. Sony is one of the leading manufacturers of electronics, products for the consumer and professional markets.
